Ferrite Arc Magnets for Fan & Blower Motors

Project Starting Point: Drawing

Axial motor fan ferrite segment magnet in automotive

Project Overview

ProfurtherMag supplies ferrite arc magnets to a manufacturer of automotive axial fans and blowers in India. The customer provides magnet drawings, and samples are produced for the customer's assembly confirmation before bulk purchasing. The cooperation began in 2018 and continues today.

One axial fan motor project required an adjustment to the magnet end chamfer. During assembly, the customer found that one end of the magnet could not fully reach its seating position at the edge of the plastic clip holder, so the U-shaped retaining clip could not engage securely. The chamfer needed to be increased to suit the interface between the magnet end and the plastic holder.

1. The Engineering Challenge

Customer Problem
The axial fan assembly locates and holds the ferrite arc magnets with U-shaped retaining clips, and each clip works together with a plastic clip holder. The magnet end has to reach a defined seating position at the edge of the plastic holder before the U-shaped clip can engage.

With the initial end geometry, one end of a magnet could not fully reach that intended seating position. This prevented secure engagement of the clip and raised a concern about inadequate retention and the magnet coming loose during operation.

The requirement was therefore not simply to supply the arc profile shown on a drawing. The magnet end also had to clear the surrounding assembly features and seat correctly at the interface with the plastic holder.

2. Technical Assessment & Root Cause Analysis

Investigation
Customer assembly feedback identified the end chamfer as the feature requiring adjustment. The magnet end required a larger chamfer to reach the intended seating position at the edge of the plastic holder, allowing the U-shaped clip to engage securely.

The focus of this adjustment was mechanical fit between the magnet end, the plastic clip holder and the U-shaped clip. It was specific to the axial fan assembly and should not be treated as a general chamfer requirement for all fan or blower magnets.

3. Actions Executed by ProfurtherMag

Execution
1. Arranged ferrite arc magnet samples based on the customer's drawing for assembly confirmation.
2. Used the customer's assembly feedback to identify the magnet-end fit at the plastic clip holder and the U-shaped retaining clip.
3. Increased the end chamfer so the magnet end could reach the intended seating position at the edge of the plastic holder.
4. Followed the customer's sample-confirmation process before supplying bulk orders.

4. Project Outcome & Serial Results

Recorded Result
Production & Commercial Validation: The axial fan project included a chamfer adjustment to address the fit between the magnet end and the plastic clip holder, so the U-shaped retaining clip could engage securely. Samples were confirmed by the customer in its assembly before bulk purchasing.

ProfurtherMag has continued working with this customer since 2018, supplying ferrite arc magnets for both automotive axial fan and blower motor applications. The assembly adjustment described here concerns the axial fan project; the blower supply is a separate part of the same customer relationship.

Practical Takeaway

For magnet assemblies retained by U-shaped clips working with plastic clip holders, the magnet end geometry and chamfer need to be considered together with the retaining parts. A sample check in the customer's actual assembly can identify fit issues that an isolated magnet drawing does not fully explain.

Assembly Fit Comparison
Ferrite arc magnet ends in an automotive axial fan motor assembly: the end as first supplied, and the end after the chamfer was increased to seat at the plastic clip holder for engagement by the U-shaped clip.

A — the magnet end as first supplied: it could not reach the intended seating position at the edge of the plastic clip holder, so the U-shaped clip could not engage securely. B — the same end after the chamfer was increased to reach that seating position, allowing the U-shaped clip to engage.
